Basic Retriever Training Class

Starting May 2, 2019

Basic Retriever Training class will meet weekly beginning Thursday May 2, 2019 at 6 pm at the NDRC main grounds, 8335 Highway 10 Glyndon, MN . The class is open for retrievers 6 months of age or older, unless prior approval is given by the instructor. Retrievers must have a desire to retrieve.

Class is open to members and non-members. Non-members use of the NDRC grounds is limited to class sessions only. Cost is $75. The class will teach you how to train your retriever in all the elements of a single marked retrieve while avoiding many of the problems often encountered during training.

The Class will cover a vast array of topics including:

  • Developing retrieving desire
  • Basic Obedience
  • Teaching proper mouth habits
  • Proper use of equipment
  • Application of Training
  • Introduction to birds, gunfire and water

The class will show handlers how to train their dogs. Handlers will be expected to practice on their own regularly each week to make progress with their Retriever. Basic Equipment needed for the Class: crate, drinking water and bowl, 6 ft. leash 20-30 ft. check cord, flat buckle collar, training collar, appropriate attire for the conditions.

Getting Started with Your Retriever Class

Starting May 7, 2019

A Beginning Class to Assist Members in Getting a Good Start with Their Retriever

The North Dakota Retriever Club is offering a training class to assist its members desiring to train their own retrievers. Participants will learn to develop the retrieving instinct in the dog, to teach the dog basic obedience skills, to introduce the dog to birds and to develop other fundamental skills needed by their retrievers to become a sound and reliable hunting partner.

The class will be taught by a team of experienced members who have successfully trained their own retrievers. The class will meet weekly and follow a step by step process for developing a sound hunting retriever. Class will meet on 8 consecutive Tuesdays, starting May 7, 2019; meeting on the NDRC main grounds, 8335 Highway 10 Glyndon MN, at 6:30 PM.

The class will cover the following objectives:

  • Encourage and develop the retrieving instinct in a dog.
  • Develop basic obedience needed in a sound hunting dog.
  • Introduce the dog to marking.
  • Introduce the dog to birds.
  • Introduce the dog to water.
  • Introduce the dog to gun fire at a distance.

Members will learn the proper use of the equipment needed to start training a Retriever. Equipment you will need for the Class:

  • One (1) 5 – 6 ft. lead or rope with clip
  • One (1) 20 – 25 ft. lead or rope with clip
  • One (1) choker collar

Participants will work with their own dogs and learn how progress in an orderly manner based upon the strengths of their own dogs.

The Class is open to both new and renewing members. There is no charge for the class. To signup check the box on your Membership Form.

Hunter & Retriever Training Outreach Course

Starting July 9, 2019

Hunter & Retriever Training Outreach course SAVE THE DATE!  This multi-session course begins Tuesday, July 9th at 6:30 PM. This is a “Train-The-Trainer” course designed to recruit, retain and reactivate game bird hunters by helping you and your retriever learn how to hunt.  The during the course, you’ll teach your retriever basic obedience, introduction to birds, gunfire, water and retrieving.   You’ll learn basic firearm safety, shoot trap, participate in a simulated duck hunt, mentored pheasant hunt, clean game birds and enjoy a “game bird” dinner with your classmates!  By the end of the course, the goal is that you should be ready to buy a hunting license and put your retriever to work finding and retrieving game birds. Saturday June 8: Amateur All Age @ 8 AM; Qualifying @ 8 AM (or following Derby)

Sunday June 9: Continuation of Open, Qualifying and Amateur if necessary.

July 12 – 14, 2019
 Entries Open: June 19, 2019
Close of Entries: July 1, 2019

Friday July 12: Master Stake @ 8 AM (Master Limited to 60 Entries)

Saturday July 13: Master and Jr. Stake @ 8 AM (Master Limited to 60 Entries)
