2025 Young Dog Retriever Training

This train-the-trainer style class is recommended for those with dogs between the ages of 7 weeks to 18 months that have not undergone any formal training.

Dogs will not be disqualified based on age as this class is meant for an introduction to formalized training for both the dog and the trainer.

This 7 session class is intended to help you build a solid foundation for you and your dog. This class will focus on basic obedience, socialization, and skills to help you bond with your dog.

• Skills that will be worked on beyond basic commands will include introduction to whistles, live birds, water, and gunfire.
• The goal will be for you and your dog to be ready to continue your training beyond this class to focus on having a well-trained and steady gun dog.
• Graduation from this class will make you a solid candidate for future classes at the club.

All classes will emphasize on socializing your dog, teaching and reinforcing the basics and giving the owner/trainer the skills and drills for things to work on during the week outside of this class. 

Trainers will do their best to follow the schedule; however, due to weather, level of the class and other circumstances, the schedule may be adjusted as needed. All classes will start at 6:00 pm and will run until 7:30 pm. All classes will meet outside the clubhouse on the main grounds unless notified otherwise prior to the start of the class. See below for tentative course schedule.

Suggested daily equipment is a kennel, sturdy 6’ leash (no flexi-leads, chain-style or thin nylon leads), 10-30’ check cord, flat buckle collar, slip-style choke chain, whistle, and bumper for retrieving. If you need any of these items please let a trainer know and we may be able to assist you.

Please also plan to bring lots of soft or moist treats to use for positive reinforcement. If at all possible, refrain from feeding your dog prior to class.
